Programs for 2007-2008

Italia a España

takes us from the Italian opera house to the back streets of Seville-from bel canto to flamenco! The first half focuses on the virtuoso guitarist and composer Mauro Giuliani and one of his strongest influences, Rossini. Rossini’s supreme melodic gift and Giuliani’s virtuosic genius are combined to dazzling effect. The second half of the program features music of Spanish composers Torroba and Turina in a flamenco-influenced display of passion and intensity.

Soul of the Guitar

From the soulful musings of Bach to the heart of the Spanish repertoire, this program offers the guitar at its most intimate and its most passionate. Milan, Pavanes; Bach, 2nd Lute Suite; Edward Flower, British folk song arrangements; Barrios, La Catedral, Un Sueño en la Floresta; and Spanish favorites by Albéniz, Torroba, and Malats.

Workshop: Total Recall: Harnessing the Power of the Mind to Enjoy Playing by Heart

Does the concept of memorization strike fear in your heart?  Or are you just annoyed at those seemingly unnecessary but persistent memory slips?  This hands-on workshop explores memory work as an essential part of the learning process.  The goal is not to advocate memorization for its own sake, but rather to improve our mental engagement in the practice room and enhance our enjoyment of performance.  Ultimately, we gain deeper immersion in the music resulting in a performance experience that is more enjoyable for both performer and audience.
